A market morning: what is worth carrying home

Peppers by the bowl, thyme by the bunch, and the plantains to leave on the counter for a week.

Go early, before the peppers have been picked over. Buy thyme in the biggest bunch they have; it dries on a hook by the window and lasts a month. Choose plantains at every stage of ripeness so there is one ready every couple of days.

Skip the pre-made jerk pastes. The blender version in the jerk chicken recipe takes five minutes and tastes like the thing itself.
